■ Title
Haiku Poetics in Twentieth Century Avant-Garde Poetry
■ Outline
This research traces the influences of haiku from the time of translations starting in the late nineteenth century through adaptations into various languages during the twentieth century. Since the adaptation of haiku was quite wide-spread, this work centers on the modernist avant-garde poets. The movements covered include Imagism in England, Surrealism in France, Ultra in Spain, and a broad vanguard in Latin America. It also considers the haiku impact on such high-profile poets as Ezra Pound, Paul Eluard, Federico Garcia Lorca, Jorge Luis Borges, Haroldo de Campos, and Octavio Paz.
