■ Title   Indigenisation of Traditional Performing Arts in Japan: Transformation of Indian Elements in Gagaku

■ Outline   Two Buddhist monks, Bodaisenna from South India and Buttetsu from Vietnam are said to have brought Gagaku compositions classified into the Rinyugaku in 736 and taught them to musicians and dancers belonging to the Buddhist temples in Heijokyo. Most of the Rinyugaku repertoires addition to a few other compositions are said to have originated in India and brought to Japan via Vietnam, therefore today they are called Tenjikugaku (musical compositions of India).The article explores the process of transformation of Indian elements of Gagaku by comparing various aspects including musical theory, musical instruments, and the dancing style of Tenjikugaku with those of ancient Indian performing arts.   Sushila Narsimhan ed.   Single   India-Japan Narratives: Lesser Known Historical & Cultural Interactions   Mombusho Scholars Association of India   pp.55   2021/12
