■ Title
Cultural Competence as a Recognition of Child-care Providers
in Multicultural Childcare Practice
A Qualitative Study of Cultural Competence of Child-care Providers
■ Outline
Multicultural awareness, attitudes and judgments through subjective reflection of childcare practitioners' childcare practice behaviors. An interview survey was conducted focusing on cultural competence. As a result of the analysis, three categories (awareness, knowledge, and skills), nine subcategories, and 17 concepts were developed. In the "awareness" category, "awareness of diversity," "awareness of own culture," "self-awareness," and "satisfaction" were extracted. Under "Knowledge," respondents selected "Multicultural knowledge" and "Self-learning. Under "Skills," respondents selected "Communication," "Flexible attitude," and "Speaking on behalf of others. On the other hand, "home-culture-centered perspective" and "lack of organizational awareness" were identified as factors hindering cultural competence. The results suggest that the cultural competence required of childcare workers is the ability and process of recognizing the culture to which they belong, acquiring information and knowledge about the culture of the children and their parents, and providing effective support through skills to respect it.
