  Negotiations between a Japanese Confucian and Qing Traders as seen in "Hyokyakukiji"("Record of Drifted Merchants of Qing"): One Act of International Exchange in Isolated Japan
■ Outline
  In 1780, there was an incident in which a Qing trade ship was washed ashore on the Boso Peninsula. At that time, the negotiations between the Japanese and Qing traders were dealt with by Kodama Nanka of the Iwatsuki clan, who was the county magistrate of the landing site, and Qing traders was centered on the captain, Shen Jingzhan. Behind Kodama was the intention of the shogunate and the boss of the domain, while behind Shen was the intention of many crew members (sailors). In this difficult situation, Kodama and Shen made full use of their Chinese writing skills and successfully completed complicated negotiations by writing. In this article, the author introduced what kind of problems actually existed and how Kodama and Shen solved them.
