■ Title
On the Relation between Kakanshogo and Funny Stories of the Edo Era
■ Outline
The aim of this paper is to compare stories in Kakanshogo and those of Edo Kobanashi(funny stories of the Edo period). Kakanshogo is one of the collections of funny stories in the Edo era written in classical Chinese language. On the stories collected in Kakanshogo, there are some theories. One says that they are merely translations of Edo Kobanashi(written in Japanese language). Another says that they have influence on Edo Kobanashi. Another says that they preserve funny stories of the Edo period that cannnot be found in Hanashihon(published funny stories). To verify these theories, the author made thorough investigation into Hanashihon, and compared every story in Kakanshogo with those of Edo Kobanashi specifically. It is concluded that many stories in Kakanshogo originated from Edo Kobanashi, but some are not funny stories and originated from essays or historical stories of the Edo period that were read in Kaitokudo school which the author of Kakanshogo belonged to.
