The History of the German East Asiatic Society 1873 - 1979
■ Outline
For 150 years, the German East Asiatic Society (OAG) has been active as a central institution for Japan-German exchanges and international Japanese studies. Since its founding in 1873, OAG's development has been shaped by leading academics, diplomats, and traders. Events organized by and publications of the OAG repeatedly attracted significant attention, which was reflected in new editions of popular books and his 1976 Japan Foundation "Special Award". In this book, three experienced historians offer critical opinions. Their history of the association from its founding to the 1970s is based on hitherto little explored sources. Comments focused on the accomplishments and misjudgments of former OAG leaders, changing subject priorities, membership composition and engagement, and OAG's relationship with politics and diplomacy.
