■ 標題   The first German-Japanese/Japanese-German Military Dictionaries

■ 概要   It is well known that the Imperial Japanese Army, in particularly the general staff and the army's educational institutions have been developed along German lines . To gain first-hand experience of the newly established Wilhelmine military, hundreds of officers went to study in Germany, among them many, who later gained very influential positions within the Japanese oligarchy. To allow the Japanese in Germany to gain as much as possible from their study abroad year(s), various German-Japanese dictionaries were published, some of them specialized on military terminology, enabling students as well as professional (military) translators to decipher even the most complicated and specialized German texts. However, it took decades before the first Japanese-German military dictionaries were issued. In 1909 and 1912 two such works appeared. The publication of these specialized dictionaries reflects the growing German interest in Japan and its armed forces after the conclusion of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance (1902) and Japan's victory over Russia in the Russo-Japanese War (1904/05).   Christian W.
