■ Title
Discourse participation styles in English as a lingua franca meetings
■ Outline
It has been known for some time that people participate in meeting discourse in different ways according to various constraints, not least the contexts of the meetings themselves. However, in English as a business lingua franca (BELF) meetings other constraints also apply, most obviously, English proficiency. In this article, I argue that in addition to proficiency, a linguistic constraint, there is a sociopragmatic constraint that is equally relevant in determining how and how people participate. I argue that for sociocultural and personality reasons people hold participation style preferences and that this phenomenon is also a causal factor influencing the ways people participate in discourse. I propose a framework to analyze this stylistic influence and present discourse examples from an authentic BELF meeting.
