■ Title
Effects of simple visual stimuli on emotions: Emotional arousal caused by background effects of comics
■ Outline
We define emotion as an evaluative response one makes about a person, object, event, or environment during the various types of information processing carried out in mental processes (Ortony et al 1988). Many previous studies have shown that various visual stimuli induce emotions. Kishimoto et al (1997) identified that the background effect of comics is related to emotion. However, Kishimoto et al. (1997) only identify the emotions that each background effect represents and do not clarify what emotions are evoked from each background effect. This study seeks to organize and categorize background effects by pinpointing the emotions they elicit. To achieve this, we employ questions related to the basic six emotions and general emotions, etc.
The results of our investigation indicate that, on average, background effects can indeed evoke the intended emotion. However, a closer examination of the individual background effects reveals that not all background effects consistently produce the intended emotional response. Furthermore, the results of the cluster analysis indicated that the background effects were divided into three clusters: (1) those evoking negative emotions, (2) those evoking surprising emotions, and (3) those evoking positive emotions.
